Checking In

Mission: Taking Flight

Having still not left sickbay after attempting to make sure everything was as she expected it to be, and having still not been to her quarters, Scarlett made the decision to find the Commanding Officer and report in. Maybe he would be able to give her some more information on their current situation and why the whole ship seemed to be so vastly understaffed.

"Captain Wolfe, this is Lieutenant Scarlett Taylor from Medical. If you have a few moments Sir I'd like to meet with you to finalize my arrival aboard the ship and officially report in."

John raised his eyebrows and wondered why he hadn't heard from the new medical chief until now. Finally deciding that she had most likely been caught up in helping get the Eclipse ready for departure, he tapped his commbadge. "Lieutenant Taylor, I'll be in sickbay in a few minutes," he said before he signed off.

"Captain, your presence will be required on the bridge in at least fourteen minutes," Eva said, appearing in the corridor.

"Commander Sato can hold things together until I get there," John said. "Now vanish off and bother someone else."

As the image of the avatar sniffed and flickered off, John shook his head and started off to sickbay. Arriving there nine minutes later, he entered sickbay and stood there, looking around.

The presence of another being took Scarlett by surprise as she stepped out of the CMO's office. She cast a discerning gaze over the new comer and immediately surmised that he would be her new Commanding Officer. Stepping forward, she smiled warmly and held out her hand. "Captain Wolfe, Lieutenant Scarlett Taylor. It's a pleasure to make your acquaintance Sir," she said.

"Ah, Lieutenant Taylor," John said as he took the woman's hand and shook it. "I had heard that we were getting a chief medical officer, but when you never reported in I started to worry. I guess you got caught up in all of the predeparture rush."

A look of fleeting confusion crossed her face. "I guess there must have been some confusion somewhere," Scarlett replied quietly. "The transfer orders I received indicated that the Eclipse was not due for departure for 5 more days. I have only just arrived on the ship perhaps thirty minutes ago?" She pursed her lips momentarily. "I guess these things are prone to happen from time to time, and I'm here now. I am concerned that the crew roster looks mighty slim Sir, is there perhaps more crew expected before we depart?"

"Unfortunately, our schedule has changed," John said, hiding a sigh as he spoke. "There's an emergency situation in the Beta Quadrant and our launch was moved up. We're launching in about an hour, and I'm afraid we'll have to make do with a skeleton crew for now. Everyone else that was to arrive over the next four days is being rerouted to Starbase Versailles. I don't expect too much trouble, plus the Eclipse is equipped with some of the best systems in the fleet. We should be able to handle anything that comes our way."

"I'm sure this ship and her crew are in good hands," Scarlett replied reassuringly. "You needn't worry about sickbay Sir, we'll be just fine. Just, give me heads up if we're going to be sacrificing bodies to lesser Gods or anything else equally damaging to the crew's health, I might need a little extra time to prepare for those kinds of situations," she quipped, her voice taking on a lighter tone.

"Well, I don't plan on anything of the like taking place, but you never know. I'll be sure to tell Eva that crew sacrifices are not allowed," John said with a slight grin. "I'm hoping that we can have a nice quiet, uneventful patrol run along the Romulan Neutral Zone and not run into any problems along the way. That's the plan, at least."

"Eva?" Scarlett asked curiously. "I've had a quick glance at the crew roster, but I don't recall seeing an Eva. Are there new crew aboard that haven't been updated yet?"

John raised his eyebrows in surprise. So, Eva hadn't made an appearance in sickbay? he thought, finding it odd. He had assumed that she would enjoy harassing more of her crew. "She's the AI avatar of the ship's computer. Basically, she is the ship. And she's a bit ... well ... you'll see," he answered.

"Judging by that particular tone I'm not sure if I should look forward to the event or avoid it at all costs!" Scarlett replied with a laugh. "I'm sure she will show up here sooner or later. Captain, thank you very much for your time, I know you are probably being pulled six ways to Sunday right now, so I do appreciate you giving up any time you can for me." Both her smile and her tone were filled with genuine warmth as she held out her hand again. "I will not keep you any longer, I'm sure you have plenty of more important people who are clamoring for your attention, but you know where to find me if you ever want to come back."

"Well, Lieutenant, no offense but I'm not too fond of sickbays," John said as he shook her hand. He didn't mind taking the time to meet new officers, specially when they were under his command. "But I do try to make the rounds every so often, so I'm sure you'll at least see me scurry by from time to time. If you ever need anything, feel free to drop by the bridge. Oh, if Eva gives you too much trouble, just give us a shout."

Scarlett laughed at his reaction to the idea of coming back to sickbay. "Will do Captain, will do," she said with a smile, shaking her head as she walked away. Well, if nothing else this assignment was going to prove to be interesting!

Giving her a smile and a nod, John turned and headed out of sickbay. Silently, he hoped that the fact that the Eclipse now had a majority of her senior staff and a few more crew than he had originally thought meant that the upcoming patrol along the Neutral Zone would be uneventful.
